Emotional Suffering: Sensitivity in Case Taking and Homeopathic Remedies for Emotional Pain

Increasingly, homeopaths are seeing patients in their clinics who are dealing with the trauma and impact of severe emotional pain. These are often patients who have generalized sensitivity to all external influences as well as particular sensitivity due to their past experience of emotional trauma and pain.

Sensitivity as a precondition in a homeopathic patient suggests a multitude of problems and considerations in case taking, analysis, and prescribing.

Some patients are extremely sensitive to a certain event or stimulation that has had a profound effect in the derangement of the vital force — we call this an aetiology.

Some patients are generally sensitive and this is their primary pathology, often expressed on all levels of function – physical, mental, and emotional.

Some patients are extremely sensitive to the remedies themselves. What do we do to help these patients and not cause more suffering? Understanding how to work with such sensitivity can help us determine not only what remedy to use but also which potency.

Generally, the question we need to ask in treating sensitive patients is: What can we do to help this patient and not cause more suffering and how do we do this?

Another aspect of dealing with an emotionally sensitive patient is around the case-taking itself when the usual method of digging and divulging creates more trauma for the patient and is ultimately counter-productive. There are particular skills involved in taking the case of a deeply sensitive or emotionally traumatized patient that we will explore in this class.

The final factor to take into consideration in a discussion of treating emotionally sensitive or traumatized patients is our own sensitivity – to their pain, to our own pain, and to determining how to best help the patient divulge their symptoms in a way that is gentle and yet deep enough to be effective.

In this class, we will explore various remedies and case studies around emotional suffering and its sometimes difficult presentations — aggression, mutism, aloofness, traumatic memories, severe anxiety or depression — and how to hold ourselves in a space of emotional safety, maintain empathy to the patients suffering while observing the indications for a healing remedy. Specifically, we will explore some of the darker remedies known for emotional suffering and sensitivity such as lacs, funghi, solanacea, impoderables, and sarcodes.

This class will include a live case taking and discussion.
