What Does It Mean To Be Healthy?
What does it mean to be healthy? Should we settle on the idea that health is the a state of complete physical, and social well being and not merely an absence of disease? Many health professionals view the body as something that needs “fixing” when broken and that disease is often found on the physical level; the person as a whole is not considered. The notion that good health is equivalent to a high level of physical functioning is simply incomplete.
From a holistic perspective, the mental/emotional and social state of a person as well as their physical state are important when it comes to good health. Moreover, preventative measures as they relate to good health simply cannot be measured; they are essential.
The World Health Organization has moved towards a more dynamic model of health that presents it as a process; an intricate balance on the physical, mental and spiritual levels in order to be able to achieve a higher purpose.
“The extent to which an individual or group is able to realize aspirations and satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living; it is a positive concept, emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.” OCHP
