What if we could look beyond the diagnosis and begin to understand the deeper developmental pattern of the child?
In this fascinating course, we will explore the groundbreaking work of Tinus Smits (1946β2010) and his book Inspiring Homeopathy, with particular attention to his understanding of remedies as archetypal expressions of profound developmental themes. Smits dedicated much of his later work to understanding children with autism and other developmental challenges, developing a distinctive way of looking beneath the presenting symptoms toward deeper patterns. We will explore the nine remedies at the heart of this course and the fundamental themes he associated with them:
Carcinosinum β weak ego and its compensation mechanisms
Cuprum metallicum β a similar fundamental problem to Carcinosinum, but with a different way of handling it
Carcinosinum Cum Cuprum β lack of self-confidence and lack of basic trust
Saccharum officinale β lack of self-love
Lac maternum β lack of incarnation
Vernix caseosa β insufficient separation of one’s own energy fields from the energy outside
Rhus toxicodendron β unresolved traumas of the past
Anacardium orientale β lack of unification and the struggle between good and evil and
Hydrogenium β the βParadise Lostβ state.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Smitsβ work is the spiral of remedies and developmental themes that he identified. Rather than viewing this as a closed or definitive system, we will consider it as an extraordinary starting point for deeper exploration and understanding. Smits died in 2010, but the questions he raised through his work remain fertile ground for practitioners. The spiral can be viewed as an ongoing journey β one that invites us to continue asking questions, observing patterns and developing our understanding of the complex inner worlds of children with autism and other developmental challenges. In this class, we will explore the themes within the spiral while recognizing that the work itself need not end where Smits’ published work ended. His framework gives us a place to begin, a language for exploration, and a foundation from which our own clinical understanding can continue to develop.
Each remedy will be explored in depth and brought to life through clinical cases. We will examine what each archetypal theme may look like in an actual child, how it can express itself through development, behavior, relationships and emotional experience, and what clues may help us recognize the pattern. We will pay particular attention to differentiating remedies with related themes β such as Carcinosinum, Cuprum metallicum and Carcinosinum Cum Cuprum β while exploring profound concepts such as self-confidence, basic trust, self-love, incarnation, energetic boundaries, unresolved trauma, inner conflict and the experience of Paradise Lost. The goal is not simply to memorize nine remedy pictures, but to develop a deeper capacity to see the individual child behind the diagnosis and recognize when one of these archetypal patterns may be relevant to a case.
Students are strongly encouraged to obtain Tinus Smitsβ Inspiring Homeopathy and have it available throughout the class, allowing us to return directly to his original work and continue exploring these ideas long after the class has finished.
Smits may have left us in 2010, but the spiral he identified can be a beginning rather than an ending β an invitation to keep exploring, questioning and expanding our understanding of homeopathy and the child.
We look forward to welcoming you to this important and timely session.

Joy Burlton received her Bachelor of Health Sciences Degree from the University of Western Ontario, always having had an interest in medicine. After a lot of investigation into different modalities she discovered homeopathy and found it to be a perfect fit for the type of deep healing she valued.
Homeopathy, she found was the perfect tool to aid others in experiencing this type of healing and lasting health. She then went on to achieve Honours in her four-year post-graduate Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Health Sciences at the Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine (OCHM).
Joy is a licensed Homeopath and has been practising in Toronto since 2007. She has enjoyed growing her practice and raising more awareness about homeopathy in Toronto and surrounding areas. Joy is part of the faculty at OCHM and is a clinical supervisor. Our students love her depth and breadth of knowledge and the many case examples she brings to her teaching.
