The world has changed—and so have the ways people cope, connect, and come undone.
In a time of unprecedented digital connection, many people—especially young people—are becoming increasingly disconnected from real life, real relationships, and even from themselves. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, practitioners across the world have observed dramatic increases in screen addiction, social withdrawal, school refusal, social anxiety, and the painful phenomenon of “failure to launch.”
At the center of these growing patterns lies the concept of hikikomori—a Japanese term used to describe those who withdraw entirely from society and retreat into isolation, often remaining confined to their homes for months or even years. While the word is culturally specific, the pattern it names is global. This deep form of retreat is becoming increasingly common, especially in young adults who struggle to engage with life offline, maintain employment, or build relationships. Screens—while sometimes a lifeline—can also become a trap.
In this full-day webinar, we will explore how these modern issues are appearing in homeopathic practice and how we, as practitioners, can better recognize, understand, and support patients experiencing this kind of deep social and emotional disconnection.
What You Can Expect:
This webinar will center the realities of practice—not abstract theory. We’ll focus on the clinical challenges and compassionate possibilities that arise when working with individuals who are deeply disconnected and may struggle to express themselves. Whether you’ve seen these cases already, or feel unprepared to meet them when they arrive, this day will offer tools and perspectives to help you feel more grounded and confident.
Bring your questions, cases, experiences—our collaborative discussion will enrich everyone’s understanding. Let’s explore how homeopathy can rise to meet the needs of our modern world.

Joy Burlton received her Bachelor of Health Sciences Degree from the University of Western Ontario, always having had an interest in medicine. After a lot of investigation into different modalities she discovered homeopathy and found it to be a perfect fit for the type of deep healing she valued.
Homeopathy, she found was the perfect tool to aid others in experiencing this type of healing and lasting health. She then went on to achieve Honours in her four-year post-graduate Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Health Sciences at the Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine (OCHM).
Joy is a licensed Homeopath and has been practising in Toronto since 2007. She has enjoyed growing her practice and raising more awareness about homeopathy in Toronto and surrounding areas. Joy is part of the faculty at OCHM and is a clinical supervisor. Our students love her depth and breadth of knowledge and the many case examples she brings to her teaching.
