The Ferns in Homeopathy: An Introduction

You are invited into the world of homeopathic fern remedies—a group of ancient, underexplored plants with unique clinical applications. Drawing on the work of renowned Dutch homeopath Jan Scholten, Dr. Marty Begin will introduce participants to Scholten’s plant classification system, which organizes botanical remedies by family, structure, and developmental stage to enhance remedy selection. This system offers a powerful way to broaden your homeopathic thinking and reach for lesser-known but often deeply effective remedies.

Ferns, among the oldest plant species on Earth, hold a special place in this system. Often overlooked in homeopathic prescribing, they represent a bridge between the primitive and the evolved, both in botanical and psychological terms. Their symbolism and energy make them particularly suited to cases involving sensitivity, identity confusion, fragmentation of self, and states of internal or developmental arrest. Dr. Marty Begin will explore the particular affinity ferns have for individuals on the autistic spectrum, where disturbances in communication, integration, and boundary-setting are common themes. These plants can also offer insight and healing in cases involving deeper disturbances, inherited family patterns—where clients seem to be “stuck” or unable to move forward in a linear, progressive way.

Throughout the day, participants will learn the key themes and indications of several individual fern remedies, how to distinguish between them, and when to consider a fern remedy in practice. The webinar will include discussion of case examples, guidance on selecting ferns based on patient presentation, and how to integrate them within a systematic approach to healing. Marty Begin ND, HMC. has been a naturopath since 1990 in Toronto, with a special love for homeopathy. With a good base of classical and Vitoulkian homeopathy, he went on to study courses and attend many lectures with most of the acclaimed teachers of the last 3 decades. With a well-rounded grasp of various methods, his strongest influences have been Jeremy Sheer, the Mumbai group, Louis Klein, and Jan Scholten. He’s open to integrating any progressive method into his practice that helps bring consistent, broad, deep and lasting results in healing and eliminating the susceptibility of chronic disease. In his homeopathic specialty, he’s been a teacher and mentor, had journal articles published, and has been a master prover and involved in many homeopathic provings including the Firefly, Quetzal, Yellow Box fish, Vanilla, and Scholten’s Panama Plant provings.
